MÉLUSINE: LaTreiziéme heure.

Polydor 2473090

Quote:
If it had to be mention three groups in the history of french folk, Mélusine would be certainly in alongside La Bamboche and Malicorne. Defenders of acoustics their music is recognized more for the its beautifull polyphonies.

Mélusine’s history is closely linked to the musical route of two childhood friends:
Jean-François Dutertre and Jean Baly. During 1973, Jean Baly, Jean-François Dutertre, Dominque Regef and Emmanuelle Parrenin stayed for two months in an old house in Coiron to create Mélusine. Then Hugues de Courson, producer of Malicorne and Grand Mére Funibus Folk recommended the group to Polydor, they agreeded to produce Mélusine under one condition: the registration of their first disc must be remade. The musicians rejected the proposal and this album will come out some months later at Chant du Monde under the name Le Galant Noyé, here we found the song that marked Mélusine success, Le Matin au point du jour, a song that tells the story of a soldier who murders his officer. They also offer a version of Pierre de Grenoble very different from Malicorne’s because of it’s purified appearance as well as two ranges of a capella polyphonies and an extraordinary version of La Peronnelle . 1975 is a productive year for the group because they released the album Le Roi Renaud also in Chant du Monde .

La prison d’amour , released in 1976, is perhaps the most beautiful album by Mélusine. The melodies and the vocal harmonies are beautiful and the texts are magnificent. The songs are performed a capella or accompanied soberly; Mélusine confirmed its reputation as a vocal group.
1977 saw the advent of Mélusine’s third album called Lève-toi et danse ! which indeed is dedicated to tunes and songs to dance .

In ‘ 78 we find Mélusine at Saint-Georges folk festival surrounded by their friends of La Bamboche and Le Claque Galoche. Very different from the previous album, LaTreiziéme heure is released in 1979, it provides a set of traditional songs that lead us to the middle age, a more sophisticated album borrowing medieval harmonies and the result its a particularly elegant voice work.

Decidedly worn by the medieval music and accompanied by the ancient music group La Maurache, Mélusine records the album Un Bal Renaissance in 1979 at Unidisc. This album is made of collections of songs dating from the Renaissance and designed specially for dancers.

In 1980 they recorded Voulez-vous que je vous dise and in 1981 Le seul groupe au monde; this album consists half of medieval melodies and half of texts written in old French and was a success, because the variety of the repertoire and because the diversity of interpretations and melodic arrangements ( polyphonies, chansons à répondre, chants à capella) and it marks the end of an era.

It will be in 1985 when Mélusine, joined by the Fiddler Jacques Mayoud records a new album, Passionnément, then in 1990 came their last album, Voix contrevoix (reedited in 1998 by Buda Music) devoted entirely to its polyphonies.

Jean-Loup Baly : chant, pipeau, accordéon, épinette, bouzouki, cuillers, bodhran
